The Color of Treatment

Exploring How Counselors Discuss Race, Ethnicity, and Culture in Treatment

While clinicians are trained to identify how various disorders impact clients' well-being, they also must be able to have conversations about race, ethnicity, and culture in the treatment setting. This website will:

  • Highlight barriers that Black individuals face while seeking and engaging in treatment.

  • Review how therapists currently engage in conversations of race, ethnicity, and culture.

  •  Introduce treatment modalities and an anti-racism framework that can be incorporated into clinical practice.

Research asserts that African Americans experience higher levels of psychological distress than their White counterparts; nevertheless, they are accessing mental health treatment at lower rates (CDC, 2016; SAMHSA, 2021)
